July - some journals and competitions accepting submissions

The weather has been very good in Donegal recently, a rare and wonderful thing indeed. Though it's not so conducive to the writing life. Ah well, we really must enjoy while we can.

The possibility of some sun may be a little distracting, but here are some submission ideas for July if you do polish off some writings in time.  


The Stinging Fly - open during July, and takes poetry, fiction, book reviews and essays. See here

Crannog - open for submissions in the month of July. Takes short story (2,000 word max.), flash and poetry. See here

Southword - a journal of the Munster Literature Centre, in the current submission period it seeks poetry in English or Irish, and short stories in Irish see here 


Boyne Berries -  currently open for issue 16 & 17, deadline 02nd August 2014. Stories under 1,500 and poetry, see details here 

The Irish Literary Review - open to submissions of poetry, flash, and short story. Online journal see details here


The Moth - rolling submission period, takes poetry and short story (2,500 word max.). See here  and for those who write for children, there is the sister publication The Caterpillar. It also accepts both poetry and short story (1,000 word max.), see here

Silver Apples Magazine - currently open for Issue Two Box of Tricks, accepts poetry, short story (3,000 word max.), creative non-fiction and one act plays see here

Number Eleven - short story (3,000 word max.) and flash - open submissions see here

The Weary Blues - poetry, short story (3,000 word max.), visual arts and photography - open submission see here

Burning Bush 2 - mostly publishes poetry, and some flash fiction  (max. 500 words). It is published twice a year, see details here

A New Ulster - seeks submissions of poetry, fiction and art, (adult and child) see here

The Bohemyth - an ezine that publishes poetry, short story (2,000 word max), flash fiction, and photography monthly. It issues on 7th of each month and  takes submissions 1st-23rd of the previous month see here  

Spontaneity Magazine - this is a relatively new online arts journal. It relies on writer response to features from past issues, and takes submissions of poetry, prose and visual arts. See submission details here  - rolling deadline. Latest issue for inspiration Issue 03

RTE Guide/Penguin Ireland Short Story Competition - max. word count 2,000, deadline 11th July 2014, winning story published in The RTE Guide. Free to enter see here 

Cork Literary Review Poetry Manuscript Competition - deadline 21st July 2014, prize publication of a first poetry collection by the winning author and twenty free copies of the book. Judge Joseph Woods - poets should make an initial submission of 5-10 of their best poems. Shortlisted poets will then be contacted by the Competition to submit their full collection. The Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award 2014 - for a firsunpublished collection of poems, deadline 25th July 2014, see here  


The Sean O'Faolain Short Story Competition 2014 - deadline 31st July, max. word count 3,000, from Munster Literature Centre. For more details see here
